Prototyping Shop Technician

Mathew Courtade, prototyping shop technician, is focused on maintaining and organizing mHUB’s prototyping shop so that members can efficiently bring their ideas to fruition. A design and fabrication specialist, Mathew has a range of experience producing for organizations across North America and specific interest in developing products that are accessible, sustainable, and human-centered.

Over the past 10 years, Mathew has had experience prototyping with Johns Hopkins University and NASA that involved experiments launched into near-space, and with Dremel for the launch of their 3D printers at SXSW where Mat’s designs were covered by Make Magazine. Mathew has been involved in Chicago’s DIY art scene, facilitating multiple pop-up galleries and a fashion show with a 4-story runway, curated by alumni of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. During the pandemic, Mathew honed their design storytelling and branding skills as a graphic designer for a Texas-based wind power supplier and a Louisiana-based jewelry company.

With a background in competitive robotics and engineering, Mathew pursued a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where they focused on object design. In their spare time, they enjoy gardening, birdwatching, and building furniture with their cats, Sniffles and Sussudio.
